Mate tea is a tea made from the leaves of Ilex Paraguariensis (Yerba Mate), a bush that originally grows in southern regions of South America. Mate tea is mainly produced in the north of Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. For this purpose, the leaves and usually also the branches of the yerba mate bush are harvested and dried (smoked) in an oven over a fire to reduce the water content. Afterwards, the leaves can be additionally roasted. Crushing the dry leaves also produces a dust called “polvo”. Mate teas with polvo tend to taste more bitter.

Some varieties, like our Muy Mate organic mate tea, are not dried over a fire. In addition, the small branches are filtered. This process results in a mate “despalado” or “sin palo”, so in the end there are only pure mate leaves. This special processing results in a light green tea with much less dust than the usual varieties. This gives our mate tea a finer, “green” flavor.

In addition to its delicious taste, mate tea has stimulating, performance-enhancing and appetite-reducing effects. The stimulating effect of mate tea is similar to coffee, but longer lasting, resulting in a more stable energy boost. It is also used as a natural performance-enhancing agent in sports and mental tasks such as learning. As a nootropic, mate tea has a positive effect on the central nervous system, facilitating tasks that require long-lasting focus and concentration. Mate tea also curbs appetite and is therefore popular in diets and fasting.

Mate also acts as an antioxidant and is said to protect skin cells from aging, pollutants and swelling.

Yerba Mate has a wide range of effective ingredients.

The polyphenols in mate have a great bioactive effect. Mate contains more polyphenols than green tea and similar to wine. These include caffeic acid, caffeoyl acid, chlorogenic acid, theobromine and quinic acid. The polyphenols act as antioxidants and protect skin cells from oxidative stress, aging, cancer and swelling.

Mate tea also contains saponins. In particular, matesaponins 1 to 5, which have a protective effect on the body.

There are three xanthines in yerba mate: caffeine (called “mateine” in mate), theobromine, and theophyline. These provide the bitter taste and energizing effect of mate tea. The caffeine content is highest at 2% of the dry weight. Theobromine is about 0.7%. One cup of mate contains 78 mg of caffeine per cup, while coffee contains about 85 mg per cup.

Mate tea contains vitamins A, B1, B2 and C, as well as minerals, especially magnesium and potassium.

In addition, there are phytochemicals such as flavonides and chlorophyll, which have anti-allergic and antimicrobial effects (against viruses and bacterial pests in the body).

Side effects are not known when taking the recommended amount. Too much may cause restlessness and stomach pain.

Sometimes we hear that mate tea can be carcinogenic to the oral cavity and esophagus. However, studies indicate that this is more likely associated with consumption of drinks that are too hot or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that are formed when the leaves are smoked. Therefore, it is recommended to consume unsmoked mate such as our Muy Mate.

For a cup of mate, calculate about one tablespoon per 150 ml of water. In the traditional way, namely with the calabash, you need to fill the calabash at least to half. If you fill it to ¾, you get a stronger effect and more intense taste.
