Teas that are more complex (with polvo and palo) need bombillas with a finer filter like our bombilla “Resorte”. In our opinion, there is also a boss level when it comes to drinking mate: chimarrao. It consists of almost powdered mate, but you still drink it the same way you would regular mate.
Depending on what your needs are, there are several aspects to consider.
If you like to drink mate with polvo (powder) and palo (stem), we recommend a bombilla with a finer filter, like our bombilla “Resorte” or bombilla “Rosca”.
Keeping the bombilla clean is also important, as sometimes mate leaves can squeeze through and clog the bombilla. Therefore, consider choosing a bombilla that is easy to clean, for example our bombilla “Rosca”. It can be easily unscrewed.
The size of your calabash is also important. If you have a smaller calabash, like our “Suave”, you don’t need a large bombilla, like our “Pico de Loro” (your calabash may tip over due to the size of the bombilla). However, if you have a larger calabash, like our “Gaucho Gordo” or a calabash for Chimarrao, the “Pico de Loro” is ideal.
It is also important that the bombilla is made of high quality materials and is cleanly processed. This way, your bombilla will hopefully last you a lifetime and you won’t run the risk of milled metal parts ending up in your mate.
In most cases, it is enough to let water flow through the bombilla from the bottom to the top. But there are also bombillas with a clever system that simplifies cleaning, such as removable parts (“Rosca”) or feather systems (“Resorte”). But water is enough. The important thing is to let the bombilla air dry after cleaning before putting it away again.

Because in most cases, you don’t need another tea filter or tea bag. All you really need is a cup, your tea, the bombilla, hot water and voilá.
Just watch out if your tea gets too strong from a long steep time or is too finely ground, then the Bombilla isn’t the most ideal as a filtering method.
