For this you’ll need: A French Press (press pot), hot water and Muy Mate organic mate tea.
The French Press: What and why?
When you think of French Press, you automatically think of coffee. It’s true that this pot was created especially for making coffee. But you can also make a terrific mate with it!
There are already so many ways to make mate tea, so why the French Press? Well, it’s simple: it’s a simple way to brew up to a liter of tea at a time. The French Press is very easy to use and the mate tea is made quickly. Let’s look at it in detail:
1. Fill in the tea leaves
How much tea goes into the pot is always a matter of taste. One advantage of this method is that you can easily control the brewing time and the amount of water. This means that there is no right or wrong. You can try out for yourself what tastes best to you. Personally, I use about 5 heaped tablespoons of dry yerba leaves per liter of water. However, I drink my mate rather bitter, so you can quietly start with 3 tablespoons and feel your way to the taste. The French Press has another special feature compared to the preparation in the calabash: Since the Mate leaves are pressed down with the strainer after the infusion time and thus no longer float around in the tea, the tea does not bitter as much. You can also take this into account in the amount of mate leaves. However, 5 tablespoons to a liter will provide a good taste that is true to mate.
2. Pour water and let it brew
After the desired amount of mate is in, you should first infuse the leaves with a sip of lukewarm or even cold water to help dissolve the substances in the leaves. Just like the traditional method, you should never infuse the dry leaves with hot water right away!
After the leaves have absorbed the first sip of water (about 15 seconds), you can pour the hot water. But be careful: do not use boiling water! Between 60 and 80 degrees is optimal for your mate.
After infusing, you can place the French Press lid with the press plunger on the pot and press until the plunger touches the water. Then let it steep.
How long is again a matter of taste and also a matter of the ratio of yerba to water. After various tests, I have come to 5 minutes to achieve an optimal taste for me. Some drink their mate a little thinner and are happy at 4 minutes. Others like it stronger and let it steep for 6 to 7 minutes.
3. Press ‘n’ enjoy
When the brewing time is over, slowly press the plunger down. Then your tea is ready to enjoy and you can leave it in the pot. Since the leaves are concentrated by the plunger at the bottom, they don’t affect the taste of your mate tea as much.
As I said, there are many variables to play with in this method. So it’s best to try it out a few times and see what tastes best to you. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also add orange or lemon peels to the mate to add a citrus note. Or maybe mint? You can experiment to your heart’s content and find the best variation for you.
